* In order not to mix discussions, Ilya has split his announcement of the release over several entries. This first part is about the in-journal promo block.
* In order to buy a promo-block, or place one in your journal, you need to be opted into Cyrillic services.
* The in-journal block is now available for everyone to purchase, and will soon be available for everyone to place.
* You can see what these blocks look like by looking at the front page of Ilya's journal.

* First item is about the in-journal promo-block.
* Next comes the announcement about the beta friends page. The question of "why" is directly addressed, and it's explained that the hundreds of styls available on LJ right now make it difficult to develop new features (with the recent debacle of not everyone being able to see who reposted an entry given as an example).
* Later additions to the friends page will add pagination (instead of infinite scroll), and the ability to change page background and font size.
* Interestingly, the first comment is a complaint about paid accounts seeing the promo-block, and the reply from staff indicates that LJ is planning on removing paid accounts at some point in the future. What that means for paid features remains to be seen. astronewt provides more information on the paid account changes here. It sounds like LJ is going to an a-la-carte model for additional features, much like you can buy additional userpics.

* Another announcement regarding the release.
* No new information, but it's probably worth reading for the comments from one of the LJ developers in the first comment thread.

* And here's the announcement regarding the new friends page.
* First he lays out the list of changes:
** Advertising removed
** You will only see an entry reposted once, no matter how many friends repost it.
** Reposts are more clearly marked
** Filter options are now available to all, and not just hose who use the navstrip.
** LJ-cut has a new look, and creating fake cuts will result in "sanctions imposed by the administration (note, that's how the machine translation phrases it)"
** Infinite scroll add 20 entries to the end as you near the bottom of the page.
** The side buttons indicate when a new entry has been added.

* He also includes a list of future features. It's not clear whether these are going to be added during the public beta process, or after the initial release.
** FriendsTimes will be added to the overall friends page and as a filter.
** The ability to leave a comment directly from the friends page.
** A list of recent entries will be included as a filter (not sure if this means your recent entries, or those of your friends)
** Entry authors will be able to identify comments to an entry to be displayed directly on the friends page.
** Some appearance configuration - background and font size.
** Better size adaptation for the device used (i.e. mobile phones and small screen computers).
** Dynamic loading and other AJAX can be disabled.
** And a few more where the machine translation was just confusing.
** He also provides a screenshot of what the new friends page will look like after some additional changes.

Also, the English-language announcement is available in lj_releases: http://lj-releases.livejournal.com/79480.html

Awesome! I like the look of being able to comment right on the feed. As long as they still keep threaded comments intact.

Also good to hear that they will add in options for font and colours... hopefully entry width as well.

I have no clue what FriendsTimes is 8D

Better size adaptation for the device used (i.e. mobile phones and small screen computers).

... I hope, hope, hope this means that I won't have to do as much horizontal scrolling as I do with the new feed now.. Hah.

Dynamic loading and other AJAX can be disabled.
!!!!! well then, that's a huge bonus.

Why oh why didn't they reiterate any of this in the pitiful post over at news that was just posted? XD;;;;;;
I doubt we'll see threaded comments on the friends page, there's way too much information to try and squeeze in. Commenting from the friends page will probably be top-level comment only.

Font size and background colors. I have this sinking feeling that that only means you can make the xt bigger, and change the grey behind the entries to your choice of something else.

FriendsTimes is a feature that's been in testing on the Cyrillic side for over a year. manonon has a bit more info <a href='http://manonon.livejournal.com/3669.html">here</a>.
Yeah, I wasn't expecting threaded comments on the flist, but I meant... as a whole. I'm just cautiously looking at trends on other social networking sites, and the ones who do have commenting features certainly don't offer threaded comments!

The font size as such doesn't really bother me, it's more the width of the entries, really. But if I could tweak the font size just a smidge (to a smaller size), that would be great too. I, fortunately, do not have any trouble reading black on white, so as long as I have a dark main background, that particular point doesn't bother me. The light grey in the current scheme is just grating on the eyes, though.

Thanks for the link!
Ayup. :)

Only I had to use CTRL - to keep from horizontal scrolling my flist in the new scheme. So now the font is tiny so I can keep from being inconvenienced in a way I haven't had to deal with in ten years of being on LJ. Because I no longer have CTRL over my own LJ.

Oh, I see what I did there.
I'm not liking the implied crackdown on fake cuts. A lot of sales and fandom communities use them and it's still going to mess with a large part of LJ's userbase. I really like buying things on LJ vs eBay because there's more accountability, and this could seriously harm the lj sales community culture.
Why though? A "fake cut" is just a regular link. Call it that and be done with it.
Yeah, I'm with Twissie. I've been on LJ for nearly a decade and I've never understood the compulsion for making fake cuts. I just find them annoying.
If you don't like them, don't use them, don't friend people who do. Simple solution that does not require any administrative action.

Because you know what would be more annoying than a "fake cut"?

Not being able to PUT A LINK IN A POST because some green userhead with nothing better to do might decide it's a ~*fake cut*~ and ban you for it.
I think in order to get a link to look like a cut with the scissor thing and all, it'd take a lot more effort than just putting in a link. I find it highly unlikely somebody would manage to do it by accident.
Request!
Would you mind putting nojs=1 on the ends of the Google translate (and maybe the Microsoft) urls? That way, the comments show up! (I used that trick to read about paid accounts getting phased out. Wowie!)
Re: Request!
Sure. I have JS from Google turned off and hadn't noticed a problem, so I wonder what's different.
Re: Request!
You know, it's probably my fault, for turning JS on LJ off. (I turn it on sometimes, but lately it's just been easier to keep it off.) Ignore me.

Re: Request!
For me, I really really like a drop down menu for icon selection (much faster). I hardly ever use my default because it creeps people out. I guess technically I should change it but then I get into a tizzy because I can't figure out what I actually would want as my default.

Not using LJ JS is also how I know LJ's new feed page has perfectly fine pagination! So making a non-infinite scroll version will not be hard for them at all.

Thanks for this!

the reply from staff indicates that LJ is planning on removing paid accounts at some point in the future

I ... what?
Haha, that was exactly my reaction. o_O I might get used to the friends page redesign (thank goodness for a computer capable of handling endless scroll...) but that seems strange. Especially with removing ads between entries. Are they hoping to finance themselves from promo blocks only, then? Or what? The mind boggles. ;-)
I think there's a lot more revenue streams than those of us using the non-Cyrillic LJ realize. Turn on Cyrillic servies, head over to http://www.livejournal.ru and you'll have a very different experience. A few months ago I calculated that LJ was likely making hundreds of dollars per day just from the promo blocks.
I've had Cyrillic services turned on for some time (prefer the Cyrillic site navigation scheme) but my explorations are kinda hampered by not knowing Russian. ;-) Interesting, though, if it makes them lots of money! As long as they don't make showing promo entries a must, that seems like a cool way. :-)

P.S.: Hm, if I click on an entry on the feed, it is displayed in the feed style. o_O
Hundreds of dollars a day is trivial in the modern high-tech world. That would barely pay for one programmer.
But they only have a couple of programmers it seems, so it might make a reasonable difference.
I prefer my journal style. I'm one of those folks that have a hard time reading black on white text, and have my LJ so that it works for me.

I think the infinite scroll is a bad idea

If LJ is planning on removing paid accounts at some point in the future, does that mean those of us who purchased permanant accounts will be phased out as well?

My Dreamwidth account may become my new place, though leaving LJ would make me very sad.
Yeah I was wondering this, too. Like... I've already paid for it. Are they going to yank what I've paid for out from under me or will it just end when my remaining paid time ends? Confused. :C
A list of recent entries will be included as a filter (not sure if this means your recent entries, or those of your friends)

When I clicked on the link in the Russian text, it lead to what looked like somebody's Friends Page because the entries there were by different users. You can see that yourself even if you don't understand Russian: http://www.livejournal.com/stats/latest.bml
"Dynamic loading" is the infinite scroll.

I guess these are the points where where "the machine translation was just confusing":
можно будет зафрендить не только пользователя ЖЖ, но и, например, Facebook;
стандартные подписи в виде, например, ссылок на социальные сети можно будет свернуть;
содержимое записи будет частично адаптироваться для более комфортного просмотра;
у авторов появится возможность оформлять записи особым образом, чтобы они в ленте, например, выглядели как мои записи с заглавной картинкой;
и еще некоторые изменения...

The first one means "It will be possible to add as friends not only LJ users, but also, for example, Facebook users." The last one means "and some more changes... " (not specified).
I think I need some help from my Russian friends to translate the rest.

Do you have somebody who really understands Russian on your team? Or are you just trying to figure out machine translations? I generally understand Russian, but I use LJ in English, so much of the Russian terminology is new to me.
It's just me, Google Translate, and one native-Russian-speaking user who doesn't always contribute and who hasn't posted in 3 months.

I've been thinking I should post a call for anyone who understands Russian who'd like to start helping out.
I've already posted something to that effect in my own journal. I'll edit that part a little to make it more definite.

I wish I could help more, but my Russian just isn't good enough yet, and I don't understand all of that technical stuff. Not to mention the mental strain of translating from one foreign language into another. On top of all I'm already overwhelmed with unpaid volunteer work in addition to my chaotic unpredictable "real" job on as-needed basis.
